Did you know that in Sheridan, the first Catholic Church was built in 1888, located at 137 Wyoming Avenue? In 1914, Holy Name Catholic School was constructed under the direction of the church's first pastor, Reverend John Duffy, who raised the funds from Sheridan residents. It was Father Duffy who invited the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth to teach at Holy Name School. The school was built at a cost of 18,000 dollars and was located on East Works Street. The school's enrollment in its first year was ninety students. Father Duffy dreamed of a day when all of the parrish's children would be able to attend Holy Name School.

Dear Parents:

Welcome to a new school year! I trust you had a fantastic summer and are ready for an amazing 2010-2011 school year.  There is a lot of excitement about things happening at Holy Name Catholic School.

We had a wonderful turn out at our Holy Name Golf Tournament.  Thank you to all who participated, as well as volunteers who gave countless hours make this event a huge success.  It was a joy to see the community, teachers, and students pull together for our little (but mighty) school.  The HNCS Carnival and Chili Supper is just around the corner.  Timely information will be distributed soon.

Holy Name Catholic School is known for its strong academic core classes such as mathematics, reading and writing.  This year we are excited to announce that primary grades will have Spanish instruction.

It is no secret that Holy Name has an exceptional community filled with committed teachers, staff, and stakeholders.  I am thankful to be part of the Sheridan community.  The Spirit of the Lord is evident at Holy Name our school.

Respectfully,

Mrs. Mary Legler,

Proud Principal of Holy Name Catholic School.

Health Tip: Kids may be getting too many calories from snacks! Kids snack frequently - usually about 3 times each day. These snacks can add more than 150 calories per day, which can mean 17 pounds of excess weight gain each year. Additionally, more kids are snacking on junk foods so they are increasing their intake of sugar, fat and sodium without adding more beneficial nutrients.

There is however, no need to completely eliminate snacking. It is recommended that instead, portions are monitored and healthy options are given.

Low-calorie, healthy snack options may include:
A piece of fresh fruit and a handful of nuts
One serving of low-fat yogurt with berries, and a teaspoon or 2 of honey
Celery sticks or apple slices served with peanut butter
Fresh raw veggies served with low-fat veggie dip

Talent Show: Be thinking about what you want to do for the talent show. Remember, it is on the last day of school, June 3, at 10 a.m.
