altMy name is Diane Ramey and I began teaching at  HNS in 1996 . I began teaching only the 7th and 8th grade classes in the cafeteria twice a week. This eventually expanded to include Kindergarten through 8th grade students. Grades K-4 attend art classes twice a week, and grades 5-8 come once a week.

In 2000 we moved all of the art classes into the old stage area and in 2002 a wall was built to replace a curtain that had separated the stage from the gym making a wonderful new space to create art.

One of the things that is unique about my job is that I teach the students for 9 years straight. It is always exciting to watch a student grow and progress creatively and I take great pride in preparing these students to transfer to High School with a good background in art eduction, theory and knowledge of various materials and their use.
Through some generous private donations we have been able to experience several more advanced areas of study such as printmaking and oil panting which are generally not offered at this level and which would not have been possible otherwise.

One of the highlights for me each year is that every December we have an “All School Art Show” at the public library showcasing these talented students’ artwork. It is always rewarding to see all of the students art on display for everyone to enjoy.
